Offered in Art, Art Education and Art History
Offered in eight Studio Art programs: Ceramics, Drawing & Painting, Graphic Design, Illustration, Photography, Printmaking, Sculpture, and 3-D Media (Fiber, Metal, & Wood).
Admission to a degree program at California State University, Long Beach depends on which program you are applying to. If you are applying to the B.A. in Art, Art History, or Art Education, then you simply have to be accepted by the University. For the B.F.A. programs, you must submit a portfolio for consideration after you have been at CSULB for a semester or two.
Applicants to the Art BFA Options must receive a positive recommendation from the faculty following review of a portfolio. Applicants who meet the minimum major-specific requirements and competitive ranking based on the CSULB Supplemental Application will be invited to submit the required portfolio. Instructions for electronic submission of the portfolio and the deadline for submission will be communicated in the invitation.
To apply for a portfolio review, you can pick up an application at the Student Services window, FA4-106 during the first 3 weeks of the Fall or Spring semesters. The portfolios are due either mid-October or mid-March, depending on which review you are applying for. We will inform you by mail concerning the content and format of your portfolio several weeks before its due date.
Applicants must file a complete application as described in the CSU system admissions booklet. The initial filing periods are November for the following Fall and August for the following Spring. You must file during this one month time span for a chance at admission. Late applications will not be accepted. There is a fee of $55.00 for the University application process. (DO NOT send the School of Art this fee; we will send it back to you.)
Foreign Students must pass the TOEFL examination (minimum score of 500) before they can be admitted to the University.
Transfer Units: The university will accept up to 70 units from a Community College and an unlimited amount from a four year college, university, or accredited art school. You must remember that there is a 30 unit residency requirement. Of the required 30 units at CSULB, 24 must be Upper Division and 12 of the 24 units must be Upper Division in the major.
