Student Learning Outcome Goals for the School of Art

Bachelor of Arts in Art - Option in Studio Art (code ART_BA01)

  1. Development of visual literacy, including competence with the non-verbal languages of art and design. (NASAD 2005-06 Handbook Section IV.A.1.)
  2. Development of, and capacity to develop, visual, verbal and written responses to visual phenomena, and ability to organize perceptions and conceptualizations both rationally and intuitively. (NASAD 2005-06 Handbook Section IV.A.2.)
  3. Ability to identify and solve problems within a variety of physical, technological, social and cultural contexts. (NASAD 2005-06 Handbook Section IV.A.3.)
  4. Familiarity with and competence in a number of art or design techniques. (NASAD 2005-06 Handbook Section IV.A.4.)
  5. Familiarity with the major achievements in the history of art/design, including the works and intentions of leading artists/designers in the past and present. (NASAD 2005-06 Handbook Section IV.A.5.)
  6. Understanding of, and capacity to understand and evaluate, contemporary thinking about art or design. (NASAD 2005-06 Handbook Section IV.A.6.)
  7. Ability to make valid assessments of quality and effectiveness in design projects and works of art, especially the student’s own. (NASAD 2005-06 Handbook Section IV.A.7.)
  8. Development of a solid understanding, technical competence, basic analytical and critical skills, and a portfolio/body of work in student’s chosen discipline(s) of focus.

Bachelor of Arts in Art - Option in Art Education (code ART_BA03)

  1. Graduates are familiar with the basic expressive, technical, procedural and organizational skills, and conceptual insights that can be developed through studio art and design experiences.
  2. Graduates have an understanding of the major styles and periods of art history, analytical methods, and theories of criticism.
  3. Graduates have an understanding of the development of past and contemporary art forms.
  4. Graduates have an understanding of the contending philosophies of art.
  5. Graduates are able to connect an understanding of educational processes and structures with an understanding of relationships among the arts, sciences, and humanities, in order to apply art competencies in teaching situations and to integrate art instruction into the total process of art education.

Bachelor of Arts in Art - Option in Art History (code ART_BA02)

  1. Graduates have attained a general knowledge of the monuments and principle artists of all major art periods of the past.
  2. Graduates have a broad understanding of the art of the twentieth century.
  3. Graduates have an acquaintance with the art history of non-Western cultures.
  4. Graduates have knowledge of the tools and techniques of scholarship.
  5. Graduates have a knowledge of historiography.
  6. Graduates have experience doing formal analysis.
  7. Graduates have experience doing research on objects of art and presenting their ideas orally.

Master of Arts degree in Art with Concentration in Studio Art (code ART_MA01)

  1. Development of a broad knowledge of art historical issues.
  2. Familiarity with issues in contemporary art practice.
  3. Intensive practice in a studio area of emphasis.
  4. Ability to articulate effectively in oral and written form about their artwork.

Master of Arts degree in Art with Concentration in Art History (code ART_MA01)

  1. Students develop a broad general knowledge of the history of art, and extensive knowledge in an area of specialization.
  2. Students become versed in historiography and methods of scholarship.
  3. Students demonstrate reading proficiency in a minimum of one foreign language.
  4. Students develop advanced abilities in undertaking, synthesizing, and effectively disseminating independent research.

Master of Arts degree in Art with Concentration in Art Education (code ART_MA01)

  1. Students develop familiarity with the history of art, and art education in particular.
  2. Students become versed in educational philosophy, with emphasis in the philosophies of art education.
  3. Students become versed in a specific area of specialization, such as curricular issues, teaching methodology, assessment factors, multicultural theory, etc.
  4. Students develop advanced abilities in organizing and disseminating data through research, exhibition, or other demonstration of competency.

Master of Fine Arts degree in Art with Concentration in Studio Art (code ART_MF01)

  1. Completion of an extensive curricular and independent experience in a specific studio area.
  2. Completion of a program of study that includes consideration of art history, critical analysis, aesthetics, methodology and related humanities. (NASAD 2005-06 Handbook Section XVIII.A.)
  3. Advanced development of individual studio and scholarly talents, interests and philosophies, used creatively to both expand and preserve our cultural heritage. (NASAD 2005-06 Handbook Section XV.A. bullet 1.)
  4. Advanced development of professional studio competence as exemplified by ongoing development of a significant body of work, and production of a culminating “project” exhibition of work. (NASAD 2005-06 Handbook Section XV.A. bullet 2.)
  5. Ability to articulate effectively in oral and written form about their artwork, and production of a project report document that successfully functions in a companion relationship to their project exhibitions.
  6. Potential to solve contemporary problems in art and to explore and address new questions and issues. (NASAD 2005-06 Handbook Section XV.A. bullet 3.)
  7. Advanced development of professional competence in the dissemination of knowledge, including logical, clear verbal and written presentation of aesthetic ideas in teaching and other contexts. (NASAD 2005-06 Handbook Section XV.A. bullet 4.)
